Uncle Joe’s FDR gaffe: A lesson in media bias
Joe Biden giving us more reasons to be grateful he’s Obama’s veep:
“When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the princes of greed,” Biden told Couric. “He said, ‘Look, here’s what happened.’”
Remember that episode of Sliders where they visit an alternate universe in which the television was in popular use by 1929 and FDR got elected in 1928 instead of 1932? I think I missed that episode, but Biden must have seen it and gotten mixed up.
When this election started I did not know a heck of a lot about Joe Biden. I did not follow the Democratic primaries, and he hasn’t exactly spent the last 8 years being a stand-out among his party. However, in the past couple of weeks he’s kind of grown on me. As Democrats go, I like Joe Biden, and only a tiny bit of my like for him is due to schadenfreude over gaffes like this, I promise.
I don’t really have a problem with political gaffes, they happen, most of them are harmless, and they’re entertaining when they do. What I have a problem with is this: which major news organizations are running special stories on Biden’s gaffe?
Fox – Of course
CBS – No
ABC – Yes
CNN – No
MSNBC – No
So only two news agencies are reporting on this. The gaffe occurred on the Rathergate CBS Evening News and even they aren’t bothering to give it special mention. Is there any doubt that had this been Palin’s gaffe, it would be all over the press and liberal pundits and columnists would spend the rest of the election crucifying her for being clueless and inane? Oh wait, they’re gonna do that anyway.
Furthermore, only Fox News has the story on the front page of their political headlines. If you want to read Biden’s gaffe at ABC, you’ll have to dig for it. Look what did make the top headlines over at ABC though…
Yes, that’s right, an interview with Sarah Palin’s ex-hairdresser. Because that’s like, oh my gosh, so important and stuff!!!
