I voted for McCain… AND Obama!

I just got back from the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tacoma, where I had the pleasure of casting my vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. This was the first time I ever actually went to the polls to vote; I voted by absentee ballot in 2000 and 2004, and I’ll confess to not voting at all in 2002 and 2006.
While I was filling in my ballot, an elderly black woman came up to me and set her ballot on the table next to mine. She pointed to the Obama-Biden slot on the ballot and said she wanted to vote for them, but was confused on how to mark the ballot. “Do I put an X next to his name?” she asked.
The state of Washington uses arrow ballots, and I’m pretty sure simply putting an “X” next to Obama’s name would have invalidated her vote. So I took her pen and drew the line in the arrow next to Obama’s name for her, showing her how it was done. She thanked me and took her ballot back to her seat.
So there you go. I voted for both McCain and Obama today. I hope you appreciate everything I do for you, Senator Obama.

  1. Counterpoint: May Obama and his followers be damned as traitors to the darkest pits of Hell, but strangely “yay you for being so nice to help!”
I know that makes no sense. I’m really trying hard to deal with conflict between my hatred of the Obamamites and my love of the democratic process.
  2. Well, I had limited options. It’s not like I could have yelled “AWAY FROM ME FILTHY OBAMA CULTIST!!!” at a poor old lady who was clearly nervous and flustered, and instructing her to fill out that ballot wrong would have been beyond mean. She’d come there and waited through the same huge-ass line I had so she could cast her vote, I figured I might as well help her.
I don’t want Obama to be President, but I can’t say I hate him or his followers in general. I know too many good people who are voting for him.
  3. Frankly, [BJM], I would have probably said something worse than you quoted. I’m not happy about that, but I accept it.
  4. Jack, were I in your position, I would have done the same thing (for someone who wanted McCain). We are all entitled to our vote, and it would be cruel to treat someone else like that, even if I think they are very wrong (which I do, you know me, I’m as liberal as they come).
    So, again, I applaud you.
  5. I think what you did was honorable and should be commended. Every American has the right to vote for who they feel is the best candidate, and doing anything to take that away from a fellow citizen is one of the most anti-American things I can think of.
While I’m a strong supporter of Obama who stumbled upon this blog by accident, after reading your story I wanted to take the time to thank you for putting your country first and helping your fellow citizen cast their vote.
