My Top 10 Scary Movies Countdown — #5 The Sixth Sense (1999)

5. The Sixth Sense (1999) ~ It’s been hyped to death with parodies of its famous “I see dead people” line. It’s suffered from M. Night Shyamalan’s determination to forever ruin his own brand with crappy self-important movies and Haley Joel Osment’s subsequent descent into drug and alcohol charges. And Bruce Willis? Well, that guy’s a Republican. Nobody likes those people.
After all that, am I still so simple as to think The Sixth Sense is one of the best scary movies ever made?
Yes. Yes, I am.
Come on, admit it, even if you guessed the twist ending or had it spoiled for you, this movie still kicked ass. It was mightily creepy with its hanged ghosts, its wrists-slashed ghost, its boy-with-shotgun-wound-in-the-back-of-his-head ghost, and the performances by Willis, Osment and the rest of the cast were second to none. Oh, and it has someone speaking Latin. All the cool movies use dead languages.
On top of all that, the love story between Dr. Crowe and his estranged, grieving wife was deep and powerful, damn near making me cry every time I watch it. So I don’t care if it’s been hyped to death, this movie was full of win.
