Summer Plans

In the last six weeks, I have written 23,500 words in term papers, essays and exams. I am one exhausted graduate student.
But the good news is, I am done. I’ve completed my second semester of graduate school. Don’t know what my grades will be, but they should all be passing and high enough for credit requirements. I am now two semesters away from completing my MA: one more semester of classes and then a semester of comps and thesis writing.
My work isn’t done. I have things I want to do this summer, including:
  • Get a second job. I still have my job in the library, but I’d like to save up as much money as possible while school is out.
  • Complete my thesis proposal. It’s not due until October 1, but I’d prefer to have it in before the new school year starts.
  • Finish some writing projects I’ve committed to.
  • Study for and test out of NT 5000 (New Testament Survey) so that I can take NT 6221 (Synoptic Gospels and Johannine Literature) in the fall. It’d be nice to take a Greek class again. In case you’re some kind of biblical studies geek, the study guides for that exam are found here and here.
  • Get an early start on my ST 5103 class (Theology III: Holy Spirit, Church, Last Things –Syllabus), which I’m going to take through the distance education office.
  • Clean up and file my notes for all of the classes I took this year so that they’ll be handy when it’s time to study for my comps next year.
  • Study for the GRE. I’m going to re-take it in the fall because I believe I can do much better on the verbal section now than I did five years ago, and I hope that a better GRE score will help me with getting into a PhD or MSLIS program next spring.
  • Take a trip to Utah in August for the Sunstone Symposium and other events. This one is contingent on my family bringing in extra income this summer, otherwise I’ll be too poor to go.
  • Travel to Washington state in late August for my father’s wedding.
Just a reminder for my friends here in Illinois: New Member Sunday at DeerGrove Covenant Church is June 6 @ 10:30 AM if you wanted to join me for my formal reception into the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination. I should be participating in the service in some way (don’t know what yet). The church building is located at 225 E Helen Road Palatine, IL 60067.

  1. I thought you were going to have to pass a Greek test to take the Greek class, but it looks like that is general NT stuff. Is the class itself a Greek class or is it in translation? And if it’s a Greek class, how do they know you can handle the Greek, when the prerequisite test doesn’t actually deal with Greek language? I think I’m a little bit confused.
Anyway, I really like your to do list for the summer. It’s a really good plan.
  2. Here’s how it works:
All Greek classes are listed under the NT department.
NT 5000 (New Testament Survey) is pretty much required for all students, a sort of “general education” course. This class is entirely in English.
NT 6221 is a class that involves reading in Greek in addition to discussions in English. The pre-requisites are NT 5000 and NT 5210 (Greek Exegesis I). I don’t have to do NT 5210 because of my training in reading classical Greek, but I do need to complete NT 5000. If I test out of NT 5000, I’m free to do NT 6221.
I should also say, I need 2 more credits of NT or OT for my church history program as well, so I have to do either NT 5000 or another course in NT or OT. NT 6221 would fulfill the requirement.
So, I just got word from Sunstone that my proposal was accepted, which means going to Utah in August is a pretty sure thing for us now. Paul told me today that he’d like to go, too, so I think we’re going to all drive out there and make it a family trip.
