Final Fall 2010 Schedule, Other things

Okay, nerdy people, the final version of my Fall 2010 schedule is up and available in my sidebar.
Sorry for falling behind on responding to comments and other discussions around the Web. We just got back from our trip to Washington state yesterday morning (I went 32 hours without any sleep), my classes started last night, and my daughter has a minor surgery next week that we have to prepare for.
Also, my husband and I are going to be featured on PBS Religion & Ethics Newsweeklytomorrow @ 6 PM EST. Look for a blog post about that tomorrow night

Final Fall 2010 Schedule, Other things — 8 Comments

  1. I’m glad you made it back home with your long, long drive from here! It was great to meet you, Paul and Harley (twice!), and I hope this semester is a good one for you.
  2. Thanks Eric, and thanks for hosting us in your home. It was really nice to meet you both (twice!), and nice to meet some of your kids this time. You have a beautiful family.
CJ, I don’t know when Religion & Ethics plans to air the episode in individual time zones, but I was told by one of the producers that it would be posted to their Web site tomorrow at 6 PM EST. So, even if it comes on your television later, you should be able to watch it then.
  3. Hi, good luck in your studies. I am doing part-time (I still work) Introduction fo Biblical Interpretation and Spiritual Formation. I have to do a review of Peterson’s book “Eat this Book” BTW I was perusing the program for the Society for Pentecostal Studies and saw one program I imagine u would have been interested in. “What should be done with Women” and “Theorizing race and Gender in American Pentecostalism” It seems women were more involved in ministry in the Pentecostal movement long before other churches started thinking about it.
  4. Dear Ms. Jack,
I am just starting my first semester of graduate school. As I recall, however, this is the second year of course work for your Master’s degree. What are your plans for the next year(s)? Are you applying to PhD programs? (I would assume as much given that you are taking modern French.) If so, what kinds of programs are you interested in applying to, and where?
    Best wishes,
    TYD
P.S. It strikes fear into my heart to think about taking 17 credits of graduate classes.
  5. #4 Noel ~ There’s a lot of debate as to whether or not Pentecostalism was ever truly “progressive” or “egalitarian” and to what extent. Certainly the Pentecostal tradition was less hierarchical and more favorable towards preachers from less favored social classes (women, blacks, the uneducated, etc.). Numerous Pentecostal and Holiness denominations were technically ordaining women not long after forming.
However, Pentecostalism is also a tradition known for imposing quirky restrictions on women: telling them they must have long hair, not shave their legs, wear long skirts and no make-up, etc. And a number of the denominations that were technically ordaining women were quietly encouraging traditional gender roles, keeping the number of actual ordained women low and the number of women actually serving as senior pastors far lower.
I do wish Trinity offered some kind of formal gender studies class. I’d take it in a heartbeat. If I do a PhD I’ll definitely look for one.
#6 TYD ~ This is my last semester of coursework and next semester I do nothing but thesis writing and my comps. I’ll just have my general American church history and New Testament comp by then. My thesis proposal is due next month.
I’m still deciding whether to do a PhD next or an MSLIS. I’ll likely apply to 3-4 programs in each and see what offers I get, and that will partially help me decide. In my heart I want to do a PhD, but my head says that doing an MSLIS and getting on the path to making a family-sustaining income ASAP is the best thing for us. It will take thought and prayer.
I’m interested in Claremont and there’s a few MSLIS programs in the Chicago area I’m interested in. I have indefinite part-time work at the TEDS library which could become a full-time position, and that tempts me to stay in the area.
I think the credit hour at TEDS is less intensive than the credit hour at other graduate schools. I talked about that a bit here.
How’s graduate school for you so far?

If you get a PhD, you could create & teach a course on that subject!
