2009 Brodies voting starts today

The Mormon Alumni Association (i.e. post-Mormon community) is hosting a set of blogging awards similar to the Niblets, wherein I have a nomination in the category of “Best Life Beyond Mormonism Post” for “And another thing . . . ” and a nomination in the category of “Best Philosophical / Religious Post” for “Even one believing parent is a powerful thing.
I also have a nomination for “Best Bridge-Building With the Faithful,” but I recommend not supporting me there. I’ll be voting for Andrew S. of Irresistible (Dis)Grace.
And finally, my favorite category: Best Seth R. Comment / Exchange. While it’s hard to choose among such noteworthy lines as “It’ll all be worth it when I get my 30 virgins in heaven” and Seth’s insistence that evangelical heaven sounds like an emotional orgy, I think I’ll have to throw my lot in with “Symbolically, in the LDS Church, women suck.” Since fMh is down right now (no doubt crashed by hackers in the employ of the Church patriarchy), here is the money comment in its entirety:
I suppose I should say something measured here, but in response to a lot of the defenses of Mormon status quo…
This Church is HUGE on religious symbolism. The symbolism and ceremony is a crucial part of Mormon identity and practice in the LDS faith. Symbolism is such a big part of Mormon worship that we are constantly getting crap about it from blue-jean Evangelicals (sorry Jack). It’s pretty dang important.
And let me put it bluntly:
Symbolically, in the LDS Church, women suck.
Thank you. Carry on.
Yup. That is totally the Seth R. comment I am voting for.
I am also supporting Mormon Expression for Best Podcast, since it got robbed at the Niblets. As for other categories, truth be told, I don’t read the ex-Mormon blogging network as much as I do the Bloggernacle, so I’m still working through the nominations and deciding. But there’s some good material there.
So, go and vote for the Brodies if you should feel so inclined.

  1. Hi Bridget, I am not really replying to the question here but am an avid, die hard reader of Mormon Discussions but not registered and wanted to pass something to you as a poster there or if you have the capability to send a pm to dr scratch. You all may have seen this before, but maybe not, but it is germaine to some of the discussion on apologetics. It is an article from Sunstone called Defending The Kingdom, Rethinking The Faith: How Apologetics is Reshaping Mormon Orthodoxy. The address issunstonemagazine.com/pdf/132%2022-55.pdf. This covers much of the controversy including many good quotes. The article was published in 2004. thanksbs
