New Church Building

Today was a big day for our church family as we said good-bye to meeting in Palatine High School and held our first service at our new church building. For me personally, this is the first time since 2004 that I am attending a church which meets in its own building and not in a movie theater, yoga studio, or the basement of another church. Not that there’s anything wrong with having temporary homes for a church family, but it’s kind of nice to have our own building again.
I helped with some of the cleaning and preparation of the new building and I think it looks fantastic. The people at DeerGrove Covenant Church have been working on this for a very long time—the church was first planted in the mid-90s—and I’m so grateful that they’ve welcomed us as a part of their family.
My photographic tour of the new church building and the day’s events is on Facebook here. You do not need a Facebook account to view it.

  1. I can understand, for on my LDS Mission in Georgia, 2 different Wards met in public schools, one not in use, and the other still used for school week days. And, some Wards in actual chapels at the time used to meet in places like warehouses.
  2. Nice.
I remember how excited the local members were when we finally got a new building to meet in. It must be similar for you guys.
  3. Thanks Katie. I think I’m gonna cut my hair again and re-highlight it this weekend as a gift to myself for finishing my first semester of graduate school.
When I lived in Provo, Rock Canyon Assembly of God actually got rid of its building and began meeting in movie theaters. The building was pretty old and they felt that the cost of building maintenance was no longer worth it. That was kind of a funny change.
I keep wondering what’s become of the building I got married in, but I haven’t been to Provo since 2006.
