Changes a-comin’

Recently I mentioned some plans to vamp up this site over on the lovely Katie Langston’s blog, plans to convert this place to www.clobberblog.com and more. Rob Perkins has kindly offered to let me freeload host me at his DreamHost account at no charge, so I went ahead and registered www.clobberblog.com.
Upcoming changes in the near future:
  • Hopefully this entire site will be mapped to the www.clobberblog.com domain.
  • Comments will have numbers.
  • I’m going to see if comment editing will be a possibility. If not, I’ll settle for a comment preview box similar to what they have at Nine Moons. We all hate it when we hit “submit” on comments at blogs only to find typos or fudged HTML tags after the fact, so I want to do something about that.
It will probably take a few days to get the www.clobberblog.com domain working correctly, so expect some technical issues while we redirect the site.
Upcoming changes in the not-so-near future:
  • I want a better custom header with a professional logo. In fact, I’d like to have one of those custom headers that changes when you refresh the page. I have several designs in mind which better capture my themes of Mormon-Evangelical interfaith dialogue and interfaith marriage served with humor and a bit of sass, but it’s not do-it-yourself material and I’m going to pay someone to design them for me later this year.
  • Here’s an area where I could use some feedback: How do you like the theme and layout of this blog? I could definitely stick with this for my custom header plans, but I’m tempted to switch to this theme with some tweaking. It has both a custom header and a custom footer.
  • Along those lines, I’m open to suggestions on other themes, but here’s what I like: customer headers, fixed width, widget-ready and sidebars menus. I like simple themes, nothing too graphically splashy, and my preferred colors are black, white, gray or navy blue, though I’d consider other colors if the theme meets my other requirements.
Thanks in advance for being patient with me while I upgrade the site, and thanks again to Rob for helping me with this and holding my hand through this. You should be able to set your bookmarks to www.clobberblog.com in a few days.

Changes a-comin’ — 3 Comments

  1. I like the theme and layout just fine, though I usually prefer 3-columns to 2. That allows easier navigation to recent posts and recent comments fields.
And I don’t know what it is, but something about the new site feels more Clobbery. (That’s a good thing.)
  2. I like the theme and layout of this blog. If you’re looking for additional options to consider, I use a premium theme called Blogging Success on one of my business blogs and have found it to be quite easily customized. It’s fixed width, widget-ready, and has a nice custom header option, as well as several color pre-sets. Or, of course, you can always edit the CSS to make it whatever color you want–as I did with my blog.
Only complaint I have about this blog layout is that the font size in the comments is real small, and so if I’m reading it for a long time–and let’s be honest, who DOESN’T read your blog for a long time?–I get a little strain on my eyes.
Finally, what’s up with all the cat pics today? You like cats?
  3. Heh, thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, the 3 columns is one of the things I like about the Simple Style theme. However, I would need to figure out how to get rid of the tacky blog title heading text and the way pages appear at the top of the blog; I have way too many pages for that.
Katie I’ll add Blogging Success to my favorites and play with it, thanks for the suggestion.
If you guys see my comments doing weird things, it’s because I’m working on numbering them. I’ve figured out how to get the numbers to appear, but I can’t get them to ascend, so every comment comes out numbered “1″. I’d use a plug-in but a plug-in strips the style and I like the way the comments look.
I’ll figure it out though, I think I’m close.
