Tom Hanks apologizes for calling Mormons “un-American”

Earlier I noted that Bill McKeever of Mormonism Research Ministry had stuck up for Mormons after Tom Hanks called them “un-American” for supporting Proposition 8. It seems that Tom has apologized, and it’s an actual apology too, not the wussy politician kind where you say “I’m sorry if people got offended, but…” Here it is:
Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California’s Proposition 8 as ‘un-American.’ I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination.
But everyone has a right to vote their conscience; nothing could be more American. To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints [sic] who contributed to Proposition 8 are ‘un-American’ creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use ‘un- American’ lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have.
Well, okay, he didn’t actually use the words “sorry” or “apology,” but at least he acknowledged wrongdoing. That’s further than most liberals get.
So, good for you Tom. Now stay the hell out of politics and get back to doing something that really matters: making Toy Story 3.
By the way people, it’s The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Capital “T” in “The,” lowercase “d” in “day,” hyphen between “Latter” and “day.”  If you’re gonna put down Mormons at least learn how to write their church’s name correctly.
