Scary.

Glad they caught this guy before he did what he was planning to do—or rather, I’m glad that he saw that he needed help and turned himself in. Coincidentally, my small group discussion last night turned to the forgiveness of violent crimes. I don’t mean to sound self-righteous, but I hope people can find it in their hearts to forgive this man and pray for his well-being. He needs it.

  1. I remember a teacher at my school (I’ll just go by her first name, Linda)… She never was a teacher of mine, but was the HAL (High Ability Learners) sponsor for the school, so I spent my lunch hours in there with her.
I mention her because she went to visit the inmates on death row. I never really asked why she felt the need to do it, but she’s a deeply spiritual woman who went there not to condemn in any fashion, but simply to learn and perhaps understand more.
Of course, the big problem with forgiving violent criminals is just a more heightened version of trying to forgive anyone else. I always wonder how it is one can forgive someone else if they A) don’t regret what they did or B) don’t want to be forgiven. It sounds to me like this man did something courageous and extremely difficult that I am extremely grateful for, and I keenly hope he gets the help he needs to live a healthy, happy life again free of condemnation.
