Dollhouse

I’ve been a fan of Joss Whedon for quite some time: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly & Serenity, you name it, if Joss did it I probably think it was at least watchable. And who could forgetDr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which you can still watch for free online in its entirety?
Anyways, his new series Dollhouse just premiered on Friday. It’s an action-drama starring Eliza Dushku (best known for her role as Faith on Buffy and Angel) as an agent within a covert illegal organization who is regularly having her memory and personality wiped and re-written in order to fulfill a variety of missions, sort of like the plot of Dark City. The show also features the return ofAngel alumna Amy Acker (Fred / Illyria) as a series regular.
As an interesting side note, Dushku was born LDS and gave an exclusive interview to Jana Riess for the 2004 book What Would Buffy Do?: The Vampire Slayer as Spiritual Guide. She’s inactive and unbelieving now, but still has ties to the church. My sister-in-law swears that she saw her at Wymount visiting a friend back in 2006, and my boss at L. Tom Perry Special Collections was friends with Dushku’s mother.
My husband and I caught up on the Dollhouse pilot last night, and it was decent. Not as exciting as I would have liked, but it’s an obviously well-crafted show that displays potential. Whedon’s shows have been known to get the cancellation shaft in spite of their brilliance (Firefly, Angel), so I’m gonna keep tuning in for now and hope Dollhouse delivers. You can catch up on the pilot episode here.
