Chicago Move

So lately I’ve been fairly busy arranging details for our move to Chicago. Here’s what I have so far:
  • We’ll be driving a 14′ U-Haul truck towing our car from Tacoma, Washington to the Chicago area. We pick up the truck and load it up on Wednesday, August 19.
  • Remember that check I lost back in April? The re-issue arrived today, just in time to help cover our moving expenses.
  • I intend to do the driving from Thursday, August 20 through Friday, August 21 with an overnight stay in Rapid City, South Dakota. I am one hell of a distance driver.
  • We’ll arrive at our new apartment on the evening of Friday, August 21, and do most of the unloading on Saturday, August 22.
  • I have TEDS orientations to be at on Saturday, August 22 and Monday, August 24. Childcare is provided, so on Saturday I will probably take Harley to orientation and leave Paul to oversee the move-in.
  • My first day of classes is Wednesday, August 26.
We have just sent in an application for an apartment complex in Vernon Hills, Illinois, which is 6-7 miles from the Trinity campus. That would put us in the Buffalo Grove 1st Ward for Paul’s church. Prayer request: Please keep us in prayer that our apartment application gets accepted. UPDATE: Our apartment application was accepted. Thank you everyone for praying!
I have some exciting church home prospects in that area and I’m looking forward to keeping my readers posted on my church hunt when the time arrives. Some other good news is that my family has warmed up to the move and they seem to be happy that I’m moving on with my life.
The moving truck is booked as is the hotel in Rapid City. I’m just waiting for a green light on the apartment and our plans will be firm.

Chicago Move — 19 Comments

  1. I am one hell of a distance driver.
With a schedule like that, I certainly hope so.
  2. In all of my trips between Provo and Sioux City (to visit Paul’s parents, about 17 hours), I always hated taking a midway overnight break. I infinitely prefer to drive straight through. Did the same thing when we moved from Provo to Tacoma (about 14 hours).
I’m somewhat concerned about Harley being stuck in the truck with us the entire time, but she really loves car trips, she’s great at sleeping in the car, and we’ll probably bring a portable DVD player. I’m hoping that between the portable DVD player, the CDs she loves, and sleep, she’ll be entertained enough.
  3. Hooray! Sounds like a grand adventure indeed! And I guess it is good news in a way that you never found that check from before. Guess God knows what He’s doing… :)
  4. I am really looking forward to seeing and hearing what God does in your life through your studies.
Enjoy the drive, take lots of pictures, and eat lots of Chicago pizza. :)
  5. Not that I want to add to your to-do list, but have you checked out ABF to move your stuff? I used them to move from Provo to Rochester (2000 miles) and Rochester to Seattle (3000 miles) and would use them again. Driving your own car, instead of a big truck, is faster and less…ugh, awful, and it was TONS cheaper than U-Haul—at least for my moves.
You can get a quote online pretty fast. Just remember to price in gas for the truck when you price compare. (It would have cost me over $1000 in gas alone to drive a U-Haul.)
  6. I just drove from Utah to PA. I left Monday around 1PM (Utah time) and arrived at my parents house on Wednesday morning around 1.30AM (Utah time). It was really boring.
    TYD
  7. Jack–
I am so excited for you. Something my mom did when we drove long distances back east was 100-mile toys. Every 100 miles, we got a little prize of some sort. Most of the time they were really small or from the dollar store, but it made it SOOO much easier to stay in the car and keep driving. Just an idea.
Hope everything works out for ya!
  8. I dread the day that I have to do this drive.
Also, have you looked into moving pods? My friends who move cross-country swear by them, but it’s possible they’re not as good of an option for families depending on the delivery time.
And finally, remember that it is CRUCIAL to sit next to cool people at orientation, because they will be your de facto friends for at least the first semester. :)
    Good luck!
  9. Good luck with everything! I’m praying that you get your apartment. You must be so excited (and a little overwhelmed, I’m sure) to be making such a big change in your life. You can do it! Love you.
  10. I suggest that you add a day to the travel on the road. There are governors in every U-Haul that will limit your speed, which could limit your speed to about 30-45 miles per hour on inclines. Be thankful you didn’t choose a Ryder; at least U-Haul governors don’t push back on your foot.
Also, inspect THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS out of that truck. U-Haul dealers are franchisees, and there have been quality problems in the past with how some of them maintain their trucks. Drive it around a little in a largeish parking lot and have someone watch the wheels as you make turns, etc. Do this both before and after you load.
    Good luck and have fun!
  11. Yeah, last time I drove a U-Haul (about five years ago) it would top out at about 62 mph. Actually, considering the load I was carrying (a full load of the company’s biggest truck, plus towing a car), I didn’t want to go any faster.
I’ve rented from U-Haul several times and never had any problems other than horrific gas mileage.
  12. Brian, I did get a quote from ABF. It was going to be $600-$700 more than the U-Haul truck, and I did include the cost of gas in the comparison.
CWC, it’s tempting, but looping through Cheyenne would add about 200 miles and 3-4 hours of driving to my trip. Don’t think we can do it. :(
I’ve also just made plans to meet up with Paul’s mother and sister in Sioux Falls when we pass through.
  13. And our apartment application has been approved. We have a place to live (and our new address if anyone needs it).
Thanks everyone for praying! I can’t believe we’re making this happen.
